About School House Ridge North

If you’re a Civil War enthusiast looking to experience “Stonewall” Jackson’s challenge in attacking Harpers Ferry, School House Ridge is a spot you shouldn’t miss. Hikers will love the rolling hills of the School House Ridge North Trail. From here, you’ll get a clear view of how tough it was to overcome the Union forces defending Bolivar Heights. School House Ridge is a lesser-known but important part of Harpers Ferry’s Civil War history. For a long time, it wasn’t even part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, only being added around the turn of the 21st century.

The ridge runs parallel to Bolivar Heights and stretches across the northeastern end of the Shenandoah Valley, covering nearly two miles. Its northern edge touches the Potomac River, while the southern end reaches the Shenandoah River. The ridge gets its name from a small stone schoolhouse that once stood by the Harpers Ferry-Charles Town Turnpike. This schoolhouse was a gathering spot for Confederate cavalry but also a target for Union cannons on Maryland Heights, about two miles away. The Union’s long-range cannons, along with cannons from Bolivar Heights, made it difficult for the Confederates to move across the ridge. The schoolhouse was eventually destroyed by cannon fire during the war.
