Maryland Heights is one of Harpers Ferry’s most iconic and challenging hikes, offering a blend of Civil War history, geology, and jaw-dropping views of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. From the scenic overlook or the historic Stone Fort Loop, the trail provides a challenging and rewarding outdoor adventure.

Start your visit at the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Visitor Center:

From the Visitor Center:

  • Walk or take the free shuttle into Lower Town

  • Head to The Point (where the rivers meet) via John Brown’s Fort

  • Cross the footbridge over the Potomac River

  • Descend the spiral staircase to the C&O Canal Towpath

  • Turn left and walk 0.3 miles

  • Cross the wooden footbridge to reach Maryland Heights Trailhead on Harpers Ferry Road
