About
The C&O Canal Towpath in Harpers Ferry offers a peaceful, scenic trail perfect for walking, jogging, and biking. Hugging the Potomac River, this historic route is flat, shady, and full of natural beauty.
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, also known as the C&O Canal, was built between 1828 and 1850. It was created to transport coal, lumber, and farm products from the Allegheny Mountains to cities. The canal is 184 miles long, stretching from Georgetown in Washington D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland. It played a big role in the area’s economy. However, when the railroad came along, the canal’s importance faded, and it stopped operating in 1924. Today, the C&O Canal is a national historical park, giving visitors a peek into the past and a chance to enjoy nature.
