During the Civil War, Bolivar Heights was a soldier campground, but its high elevation gave strategic advantage to the army which could gain control of it, which led to fierce fighting. With the past behind us, today, we hope visitors can come enjoy Bolivar Heights hiking experience, the spectacular panoramic views and appreciate the historical significance of the location.

Walk
From Lower Town Harpers Ferry near John Brown’s Fort, the walk to Bolivar Heights is about 2 miles and mostly flat, but with a decent incline walking up out of the Lower Town. There are plenty of places to stop for food and drinks along the way, some of the favorites are Rabbit Hole, Kelley Farm Kitchen, Snallygasters, Bolivar Bread Bakery, and The Country Cafe in Bolivar.
Drive
If you’ve parked at the Harpers Ferry train station parking lot, you can drive up through Lower Town on Washington St. two miles to Bolivar, and the Bolivar Heights Trails and Scenic Overlook will be located on your right.
If your car is located at the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park Visitor Center, make your way back to your car via the shuttle bus and then drive the short distance to Bolivar Heights. There is a small parking lot available and is very close to the trails.

Be safe on the trails! Before setting out, plan your hike, check the weather, prepare adequate supplies, and consider the trail’s difficulty level. Always stay on marked paths, respect wildlife, and carry out any trash. Be sure to bring plenty of water, sun protection, and navigating tools to make the most of your visit.
