Harpers Ferry is famous for its mountain views, but this May, the local arts scene takes center stage. The Charles Washington Symphony Orchestra (CWSO) is presenting CODA; DA CAPO, a spring concert that marks a major milestone for the ensemble and the community.
A Founding Conductor’s Final Bow
This performance serves as the official send-off for Maestro Camilo Pérez-MejÃa. As a founding member of the orchestra, his leadership has been a constant in the local music scene for years. The concert title—CODA; DA CAPO—perfectly captures the moment: a “Coda” to his long tenure and a “Da Capo” (a return to the beginning) as the orchestra moves into a new era.

The Program: Cello in the Spotlight
For those who love the rich, soulful sound of the cello, this program is a rare treat. Maestro Camilo is well-known in the community for his work with the instrument, and this lineup highlights its versatility:
- Mozart — Magic Flute Overture
- Vivaldi — Double Cello Concerto in G Minor
- Saint-Saëns — Cello Concerto No. 1
- Schubert — Unfinished Symphony
- Khachaturian — Adagio from Spartacus
Why It’s Worth the Stop
If you’re in town for a weekend of hiking, history, or staying for Mother’s Day weekend, this afternoon performance is a great “local” experience to add to your itinerary. It’s a chance to see the community gather in a way most tourists miss.
The Local Take: A family member of one of the staff here had the privilege of performing with Camilo at Shepherd University in the past, so it’s great to see him finishing his run with a program that plays so heavily to his strengths. It’s a solid afternoon of music that celebrates how much the arts have grown in Harpers Ferry.

If you’d like a casual breakfast or lunch before the performance, steps across the street is County Cafe, known for it’s wonderful breakfast. If you’re planning on dinner after the performance, you can stay in town and find great places to eat, or perhaps with a 5-minute drive to Charles Town, you might like to try Mezza Luna, a family Italian restaurant with the best garlic knots known to man we think! It’s a popular restaurant among locals for your favorite Italian classic meals with reasonable prices. For fine dining and something very special in Charles Town, consider the Hillbrook Inn. The Hillbrook Inn has fine dining, but the dress is business casual.
