Looking for a challenge? The Loudoun Heights Trail is a strenuous 7.5-mile (12.1 km) round-trip hike that takes about 4–5 hours to complete. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, unique rock formations, and multiple scenic overlooks—including the unforgettable Split Rock Overlook.

This trail is best suited for experienced hikers who want a workout with a serious reward. You’ll see the only view into Pleasant Valley and experience the very sight that inspired Thomas Jefferson to say the sight was worth a trip across the Atlantic.

Getting There

From Lower Town:
Begin at Camp Hill via High Street and follow the white-blazed AT up the stone steps to Jefferson Rock. Continue for about 1 mile to the bridge and cross to connect with the trail via Virginius and Hall’s Islands.

From the Visitor Center:
Follow the trail to Lower Town and cross the highway bridge over the Shenandoah. Use the River Access parking area to connect to the AT above the highway.
